Each camper will be assigned a school horse for their session of camp. We have a wide selection of school horses that range in size, color, riding ability, and personality.
The daily schedule includes a long morning riding session on your assigned horse. Each day we will work on different aspects of riding to secure a better-balanced seat for the rider. There will also be theory sessions that will be held in the barn or in the lounge to get out of the heat during midday. Theory sessions include bathing, braiding, clipping, identifying parts of the horse, scavenger hunts, and other learning opportunities.
Pleasant Hill Farm provides the horses and all the equipment for camp; however, you are welcome and encouraged to bring your horse. Boarding your horse during camp is $30 per day. This fee includes individual turnout.
Camp begins at 8:30 am and ends at 1:00 pm Monday - Friday. Campers should bring their lunch and water every day except Friday. On Fridays, a pizza lunch will be provided.
Three assistant instructors have been with Cammie for more than ten years. The assistants are certified in CPR and life-saving skills and are skilled in riding instruction and horse management. Each camper gets a generous amount of personal attention with a ratio of 3 instructors to 15 campers.
Some afternoons include going to the pool or for ice cream. If you are staying in after camp you must email and give written permission for your child to leave the property in a car with the adult instructor and permission to go swimming.
Correct riding attire is mandatory. For your safety, wear a hard-soled shoe with a small heel. Paddock or Tall boots are preferred, but a pair of hiking boots or duck boots will do fine. Tennis shoes and sneakers are not permitted for riding. Long pants are required for riding. Riding pants, chaps, jeans, and stretch pants are all acceptable.
An ASTM/SEI-approved helmet is required for all campers. A bike helmet is not designed for horseback riding and is unacceptable. We have several approved school helmets in different sizes available for you to borrow during your week of camp if you do not have a helmet of your own.
There is an "After Camp" optional session each day, Monday-Thursday, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm for Beginner/Novice Campers. Campers can choose to stay for a single afternoon or multiple afternoons. The cost for each After Camp is $75 per day.
After Camp, campers will have a chance to do a second theory session and also ride again. Usually, the afternoon ride is more laid back and consists of bareback riding or riding games.
Riding levels in these sessions range from those who have little or no riding experience to those with the skills to comfortably walk, trot, and canter. Camps will be split into 3 sections with an instructor-to-student ratio of 3 to 15 per section.
Beginner Students will learn the basics of riding and horsemanship.
Novice Students depending on their skill level, concentrate on their form, cantering, and the basics of jumping. Novice students with more experience will be working on their form over bigger fences.
Intermediate students will be set up as daily clinics and field trips, other instructors will be brought in depending on the week.
For enrollment, Cammie must receive the camp application, $100 nonrefundable deposit, and signed release form if a new student.
